A Much More Nuanced Reality
As a freelance web developer, I do use AI every day—but rarely in the way most people imagine.
It is neither a replacement for my expertise nor a magic wand capable of building an entire project in seconds.
Instead, AI has become a valuable assistant that supports me across every aspect of my work. And as any freelancer knows, those responsibilities extend far beyond writing code.
Being a Freelance Developer Is About Much More Than Coding
When people picture a web developer, they often imagine someone spending the entire day writing code in front of multiple monitors.
The reality is very different.
During a typical week, actual development sometimes accounts for less than half of my working time.
I also need to analyze client requirements, prepare quotations, answer emails, write documentation, provide technical support, manage my business communication, keep up with new technologies, and oversee projects from start to finish.
In reality, a freelancer must be skilled in many different areas:
- Web development
- Project management
- Strategic consulting
- Client communication
- Marketing
- Administrative tasks
- Training and customer support
These are precisely the areas where artificial intelligence brings me the greatest value today.
A Brainstorming Partner Available Anytime
One of the ways I use AI most frequently is for brainstorming.
Whenever I’m facing a complex problem or exploring a new idea, it’s always helpful to challenge my thinking with an external perspective.
If a client wants to develop a specific feature or modernize an existing website, I can use AI to explore different approaches, weigh the pros and cons, and imagine several possible solutions.
The goal isn’t to receive a ready-made answer. It’s to enrich my own thinking more quickly.
It’s a bit like having a colleague who’s always available to exchange ideas before making a decision.
In many cases, this process helps me identify the solution that best fits my client’s actual needs much faster.
Debugging and Code Reviews: A Valuable Second Pair of Eyes
Even after years of experience, no developer is immune to a particularly stubborn bug—or a small mistake that goes completely unnoticed.
This is where artificial intelligence has become an excellent technical assistant.
I regularly use it to analyze pieces of code, identify hard-to-reproduce issues, or understand the root cause of unexpected behavior. When a problem occurs on a WordPress or WooCommerce website, I can provide the context, error messages, or log files and quickly receive several potential avenues for investigation.
But its value goes well beyond debugging.
Before a problem even exists, I can ask AI to perform a code review. Much like another developer reviewing my work, it can spot inconsistencies, missing edge cases, overlooked details, or sections of code that could be simplified or optimized.
Some of these observations concern what’s often referred to as silent issues: the code appears to work perfectly, but hidden weaknesses could cause problems during future updates, increased traffic, or ongoing maintenance.
AI doesn’t build my projects for me.
What it does is help me step back from my own work, improve the overall quality of the code I produce, and reduce risks before they ever become problems for my clients.
Ultimately, AI acts as a second technical perspective—always available, capable of challenging certain implementation choices, but whose suggestions are always reviewed, verified, and validated before being applied.
When Writing Takes as Much Time as Development
Many people underestimate how much writing is involved in a freelancer’s daily work.
In reality, it’s everywhere.
Every project generates quotations, reports, documentation, emails, user guides, and much more.
AI helps me organize my ideas, rewrite sections more clearly, and ensure that documents are easy to understand.
I regularly use it to prepare:
- Administrative letters
- Responses to organizations and institutions
- Technical documentation
- Commercial proposals
- Meeting summaries
The goal isn’t to generate content automatically.
Instead, it allows me to create a solid first draft much more quickly, which I can then adapt to each specific situation.
A Marketing Assistant to Grow My Business
Building websites is one thing.
Making potential clients aware of my expertise is another.
Like many business owners, I also need to invest time in marketing and communication.
Blog articles, LinkedIn posts, case studies, and improving my own website are all essential activities—but they can quickly become time-consuming.
Artificial intelligence helps me:
- Discover new content ideas
- Structure articles
- Identify common client questions
- Improve existing copy
- Prepare professional social media posts
Several articles published on this blog actually started as conversations with AI before being expanded with my own real-world experience.
The tool doesn’t replace expertise—it simply helps showcase it more effectively.
What AI Will Never Do for Me
Although artificial intelligence helps me every day, some responsibilities remain fundamentally human.
AI doesn’t meet with my clients or understand the unique challenges of their businesses.
It doesn’t define their digital strategy.
It doesn’t make the technical decisions that shape a project.
And above all, it accepts no responsibility for the outcome.
Every recommendation, every line of code, and every final decision remains under my control.
That is the fundamental difference between using a tool and depending on one.
AI Doesn’t Replace Expertise—It Strengthens It
The best results I achieve with artificial intelligence don’t come from automatic answers.
They come from combining my experience as a developer, my understanding of client needs, and AI’s ability to accelerate certain tasks.
In many ways, artificial intelligence reminds me of what search engines or modern frameworks represented when they first appeared.
Professionals who know how to use them become more efficient.
Those who expect them to replace expertise quickly discover their limitations.
In my work as a freelance web developer, AI is neither a competitor nor a replacement.
It’s simply a highly capable assistant that allows me to spend more time on what truly matters: understanding my clients’ needs and building web solutions that support their business goals.
